What Is Organic Food? Is It Healthier Than Non-Organic Alternatives?

Eating organic food may reduce exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins, such as pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Limited studies suggest that organically grown crops contain fewer harmful nitrates and are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Additionally, organic dairy and meat have higher levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. Many consumers, including myself, believe that organic food tastes better and feels more nourishing. As the saying goes, people vote with their dollars. Interestingly, the popularity of organic food has increased significantly over the last 20 years—the worldwide market for organic food is projected to reach $484 billion by 2030.

There are limited scientific studies that support the idea that organically produced food is healthier. However, it is essential to consider the funding sources behind this information to assess any potential bias. In the meantime, like millions of others, I trust my taste buds and the positive results I experience regarding my health. Additionally, it's essential to remember that organic practices are more beneficial for the environment and promote animal welfare.

What is organic food?

Organic relates to the method of food production, which has been grown or raised without:

  • Artificial chemicals.

  • Hormones.

  • Antibiotics.

  • Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

For food to be classified as organic, it must be free from artificial additives, including artificial sweeteners, preservatives, colouring, flavouring, and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Organic farming utilises natural fertilisers, such as manure, to promote plant growth. Animals raised organically are not treated with antibiotics or hormones to promote faster growth or higher production.

Organic farming practices also enhance soil quality and contribute to land conservation, helping to reduce pollution.

Summary

Organic food is typically more expensive than conventional options. This suggests that consumers are not choosing it based solely on price; instead, they are motivated by the perceived benefits. Shoppers are discerning, particularly when it comes to their daily food purchases, so there must be a distinct advantage to buying organic. The environmentally friendly production methods imply that the food is produced naturally. Ultimately, what matters most to me is the taste and how I feel after eating it, which is often healthy and energising.
